Staircase Ventures Announces Investment in Ultimarii
September 9, 2025
We are thrilled to announce that Staircase Ventures is leading the seed-stage round for Calgary-based Ultimarii.
Ultimarii’s AI-based software accelerates the regulatory and legal approval process for large infrastructure projects. Its AI agent guides users through complex processes, enabling them to complete workflows 10 times faster and more accurately. Ultimarii is already working with some of Canada’s most respected law firms and energy companies and is quickly expanding into the utilities and mining sectors.
Spending on infrastructure projects is massive and accelerating as demand for power generation, infrastructure renewal, data centres, and grid modernization increases. In fact, the World Bank estimates that global infrastructure investments will reach $94 trillion by 2040. However, regulatory friction slows the approval and construction process and adds billions in costs.
We believe that AI will transform every industry and functional area. Where there is a complex, specialized, high-security, and high-value process involved, there is an opportunity for a tailored AI solution that can be integrated into the workflow. These workflow-integrated AI solutions can achieve a strong competitive moat by becoming the central hub through which all data flows.
Ultimarii is one of these businesses, and when we met the co-founders, Josh and Doug, we were immediately impressed with their vision and complementary skill sets. Josh is a repeat successful founder with a track record of success in engineering, leadership, and AI-led tech startups. Doug brings a unique blend of legal, public sector, and entrepreneurial experience to the company. As we got to know them, we appreciated their speed of execution, clear focus, and ability to attract outstanding team members.
We are honoured to be working alongside Doug, Josh, and the rest of the Ultimarii team as they transform the regulatory and legal landscape for some of our largest industries.
Founders: Josh Malate and Doug Schweitzer.
