Startup Lessons from Peer Group Sessions
September 4, 2025
At Staircase Ventures, peer support is a core pillar of our Founder Growth Platform, which also includes executive coaching, health and wellness coaching, family support, and access to a personal financial advisor. While every founder’s journey is unique, many of the challenges are shared. By connecting with peers who have been in similar shoes, Staircase Ventures founders gain practical insights, fresh perspectives, and the confidence to navigate the highs and lows of building a company.
Peer Group Sessions
Every month, the founders and leadership teams across our portfolio come together for a virtual peer group session. Each session is interactive and has a specific topic or focus. The conversations often result in the sharing of practical advice, giving founders ideas and insights they can implement in their businesses today.
Below are some of the key insights from our recent peer group sessions:
- Staying Focused and Other Leadership Lessons with Mike Wessinger: Staircase Ventures founders explored the evolving role of leadership. Mike stressed that the path to scale starts with a narrow focus. It’s easy to get distracted by non-core prospects, but the companies that succeed are the ones that stay disciplined on a narrowly defined ICP and prove product fit before expanding. Mike also emphasized the importance of making space to think about the long-term vision and the milestones required to get there, rather than being consumed by short-term execution. Finally, he reminded the group that building the right team for the next stage of growth is one of the hardest but most critical parts of leadership. Very few leaders can transition from a seed-stage to a later-stage company, so continually reassessing the team and making tough decisions early on will often accelerate growth.
- Operational Excellence, KPIs & Strategic Decision-Making with Ahmed Khaishgi: The Staircase Ventures founders explored how to keep teams focused on the few things that matter most. Ahmed encouraged building a simple 10-line financial model to identify the biggest levers in the business, then tying initiatives directly to the metrics that matter most. The group emphasized prioritization and highlighted that aligned, cohesive teams outperform disconnected superstars. Ahmed also introduced a quarterly prioritization model to help leaders evaluate trade-offs more objectively, and the “Focus Funnel” framework, which guides teams to sort initiatives into what to eliminate, automate, delegate, or concentrate on. These frameworks sparked discussion on how to avoid spreading teams too thin and instead double down on the few initiatives that truly move the needle.
- AI for Internal Tools and Leveraging AI for Value Proposition: Staircase Ventures founders discussed how AI is reshaping nearly every function, from go-to-market and customer support to engineering and operations. Teams are experimenting with AI to accelerate content creation, streamline lead generation, boost developer productivity, and embed AI directly into their products. Founders shared which tools were most impactful for their businesses and exchanged ideas on how AI impacts the hiring process and the types of roles they are hiring for.
Other Ways Our Founders Connect
The peer group sessions are just one way founders support each other. The conversations continue across multiple touchpoints. Our dedicated Slack community for leaders of Staircase Ventures portfolio companies provides a space for quick questions, candid advice, and resource-sharing. Through the Slack channel, founders are co-creating shared resources such as playbooks and curated lists of AI tools, sharing articles, and seeking hiring referrals, among other ways of supporting one another. Further, informal founder socials create opportunities to connect on a more personal level. And once a year, we host a Founder Summit, bringing the Staircase Ventures portfolio together for an immersive offsite where founders learn from expert speakers, collaborate in workshops, and strengthen personal connections. Together, these touchpoints foster trust, spark collaboration, accelerate founders’ learning and development, and ensure that every founder feels backed by a community invested in their success.
Shared Carry
The innate collaboration and support amongst the founders in the Staircase Ventures portfolio is reinforced by something unique to Staircase Ventures: every founder in our portfolio participates in a shared carry model. All founders receive a portion of the fund’s carry. Founders have a vested interest in the success of every other company in the portfolio, creating alignment across the portfolio and reinforcing a culture of peer support and shared success.
Looking Ahead
At Staircase Ventures, we believe founders build their best companies when they are supported by peers who understand their journey and by resources designed to help them succeed. That’s why we’ve made peer support a central pillar of our Founder Growth Platform, alongside executive coaching, health & wellness coaching, family support, and personal financial advice.
Looking ahead, we’re committed to continually evolving this platform, expanding the ways founders connect, introducing new expert voices, and building resources that anticipate the challenges of tomorrow – so together, Staircase Ventures founders can build enduring companies that shape the future.
